I'm going to start doing this. Drives me crazy when I read a moving quote and later can't remember how it went or where I found it. Thanks for sharing.

It’s seriously a game changer. And I’m always a sucker for any excuse to buy a cool looking note book

I am so inspired by this! It's something that I've (kind of) already been doing except more general with literature, poetry, music & movies. I've been using my notes app on my phone...which I haven't been completely satisfied with. So maybe back to hand-writing it is.

On another note, I totally agree that the movie version of Brooklyn is better than the book. :)

I’m so glad it helped! It’s a great idea to do it with more than just books too. I really find handwriting helps the memory so much more. In school one of the main ways of studying that worked for me was rewriting my notes slowly/neatly before reviewing them and I always remembered so much more doing that. And haha glad it’s not just me with Brooklyn. I never thought I’d say that about movie vs book but here we are

Yes! So helpful with the memory and slowing down with the whole process.

Also, (ssshhhh...) I also liked the movie version of Thomas Hardy's Far From the Madding Crowd better too 😊

I haven’t read or seen the book/movie (I really struggled with Tess of the D’Urbervilles in high school-I read it on summer vacation for AP Lit when I was in Hawaii and…it was a bit of a downer for a tropical island haha) but I have a couple of other Thomas Hardy’s on my shelf to try again because a) I know he’s worth it and b) I’m more able to appreciate his writing now that I’m older

Same. Definitely one to appreciate when we are older. I have yet to read Tess of the D'Urbervilles.

But the movie w/ Carey Mulligan is up there w/ Brooklyn & Jane Eyre for me. (As far as movie adaptations go)

I am curious how you organize your quotes. I write down quotes from books and online articles but include them in my daily journal where I typically write my morning pages. I find returning to them difficult because they are all over the place.

I (unfortunately) can’t offer much organization help. I just write them as I finish a book, and other than keeping theology reads in a separate journal, don’t try to do genre. If I need to go back and find a quote, I can use my goodreads list (which preserves the chronological order of my reading) to help me find whereabouts a quote might be. Otherwise I just flip/skim through my journal, which I end up enjoying because I end up getting a refresher of where I’ve been. I know of people who use journals with removable pages so they can keep genres together, and others who color code their quotes to help keep them organized. Another way I’ve heard is keeping a piece of paper as a “table of contents” at the front of the notebook to help track where quotes are. Hope some of these ideas help!

That does help! I like skimming through my journals too. I find it helps keep some of the quotes closer to the heart. Moving the quotes into their own notebook will simplfy things enough. I already organize the moving pieces of life with colour and block planners out of necessity, so I think leaving the quotes as they come would be good. I like the idea of listing the books I read chronologically. Now off to choose which journal to use!

Choosing journals is one of the most fun parts. I had a great time browsing for me newest commonplace book

I love this and I want to start doing it! I used to write in my journal every night after I got into bed. But back surgery made it impossible for me to sit up in bed, and I fell out of the habit. I have a few blank journals given to me by people who don’t know that I more or less stopped using them. This is the nudge I need to get back to it. Thank you!

You’re so welcome! I can’t journal right before bed-I used to when I was younger but it doesn’t work for me now as a tired mom haha. I try to do it early evening when I still have some energy/motivation to do a thing. And always good to have extra journals on hand! Glad I could help give a push!
